Welcome to Blog of Iaido Classes at Shoryukan Dojo and UAF CTC (RECR F150N TE1)

We train in Muso Jikiden Eishin Ryu (MJER) Iaido, following the Tanimura ha lineage, as formatted by the 17^th ryu-ha headmaster during late nineteenth century, Oe Masamichi. We follow the teachings of the late Norikazu Iwata Sensei (1913-2011), as promoted and taught by Eikoku Roshukai (The English branch of Iwata Sensei’s Roshukai dojo family) in the UK and abroad. Eikoku Roshukai maintains strong ties with Iwata Sensei’s remaining students in Japan, and our affiliation brings the teaching and heritage of Iwata Sensei into our practice.

Our classes are mainly through the University of Alaska, Fairbanks Community and Technical College (CTC), Recreation Program (RECR F150N TE1). But we do also train during the summer outside of the spring and fall university schedule) to keep our progress current and alive.

We have been very lucky to have Martin Simpson Sensei from Eikoku Roshukai visit during 2014, 2015, and again in 2016 for extended Muso Jikiden Eishin Ryu seminars, with instruction and training in techniques of Omori Ryu Waza, Eishin Ryu waza, Oku Iai, and Tachi Uchi no Karai (Oe Masamichi brought together the major sets of forms into the MJER curriculum recognized today). We even had the opportunity to practice some forms of Hyoho Niten Ichi Ryu, and look at sword applications has they relate to aiki-juijitsu and aikido. For these seminars, we have partnered with the University of Alaska, Fairbanks Fencing Club and CTC Fencing Class to pool funds and training spaces, and in doing so, have introduced this Japanese sword art to the European fencing community in Fairbanks. We try to promote these training opportunities to anybody interested in learning, regardless of background or affiliation. And we hope to continue having these seminars and growing with Eikoku Roshukai.

I consider it a great privilege and exciting opportunity to share, train, learn, instruct and grow in this art of complex body movement, sword–body coordination, martial application, and thought processes, which still maintains an interesting mix if past and current relevance in this modern age and society.
